Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
